Floating Explained

Invented in the 1950s by American neuroscientist Dr. John Lilly for research on the mind, Floating remains a relatively unknown therapeutic method of relaxation. Regardless, many of our clients regularly incorporate Floating as part of a healthy lifestyle and attest to the very real benefits of finding 60 minutes for yourself. The most common reports are profound peace and relaxation, a feeling calmness, a reduction of stress, deep concentration and creativity, and freedom from physical pain and tension.

Research spanning decades in Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST), the clinical name of Floatation Therapy, has found amazing physical and mental benefits. The unique sensory-input-controlled environment required for Floatation Therapy holistically empowers the body and mind to feel better. It's quick, easy, and can help almost everyone - that's the beauty of Floating!

Floating in the curative powers of 1000 pounds of the highest-quality, medical-grade Epsom and Dead Sea Salts, your muscles and joints are freed from the stresses and strains of gravity. It's an environment you simply cannot experience anywhere else! Floatation Therapy is the ultimate Epsom salt bath, where everyone Floats effortlessly, just like in the Dead Sea.

The calming, unique sensory-input-controlled environment is designed to allow you to unplug and have a break from the constant bombardment of the noises and distractions of the outside world. Floating lets you achieve deep levels of physiological relaxation, natural pain relief, and rapid recovery in as little as an hour.

The water is kept at the same temperature as your skin, with an advanced ventilation and heating system specifically designed to keep you comfortable the whole time. Most Clients prefer the more traditional absence of light or sound but others prefer to bring an underwater music player or keep the soft blue light on inside during their Float. You control the entire experience!

Think of your daily life: an all-multi-task-all-the-time environment which makes it difficult for you to actually process internal thoughts and reflect when you are handling external distractions all of the time.  Life is happening at a constant speed and never stops. Floating allows you to temporarily unplug from the relentless noise of the world. Come see what your mind can do when it can focus on what you want it to!

All About Epsom Salts

East Coast Float Spa Epsom Salt
  • Epsom salt is not just any regular salt - it's comprised of two of the most important minerals in our body, and sadly also among the most deficient - Magnesium & Sulfur.
  • Sulfur plays essential roles, including helping insulin function, detoxification, joint health, fighting fatigue, depression, physical and psychological stress, degenerative diseases, reducing chronic pain, improving cellular intake of nutrients, reducing muscle soreness, alleviating allergies, improving lung function, and increasing strength and endurance. A few key points to note about Sulfur include:
    • Required for formation of proteins in joints; those suffering with rheumatoid arthritis typically have low levels of sulfate

    • Key in detoxifying drugs and environmental contaminants

    • Is not easily absorbed in the stomach, but research has shown that it can be absorbed across the skin

  • Epsom Salt has been used for centuries for its medicinal qualities and health benefits: it was once the most popular medical drug in England!

  • Soaking in an Epsom Salt bath is one of the most effective means of making the Magnesium your body needs readily available. Floating is the ultimate Epsom Salt bath!

Magnesium 101

  • Magnesium helps in creating energy molecules, forming bones and teeth, relaxing blood vessels, regulating blood pressure, helping prevent cardiac arrest, heart attack and stroke, helping the heart muscles, bowel functions, regulating blood sugar levels... just minor stuff like that!
  • Over 100 health benefits have been ascribed to Magnesium, among them being therapeutic benefits for Fibromyalgia, Atrial Fibrillation, Type 2 Diabetes, Premenstrual Syndrome, Cardiovascular Disease, Migraine, Aging, Antioxidant Synthesis, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Asthma, Migraines, Peptic Ulcers, Digestion Problems.
  • 80% of our metabolism is dependent on Magnesium

  • For every molecule of glucose you need to metabolize, you need 28 molecules of Magnesium. The average american consumes 220-260 lbs of sugar a year, draining the body & brain of Magnesium!

  • Researchers and physicians report that raising your Magnesium levels may:

    • Improve heart and circulatory health, by reducing irregular heartbeats, preventing hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots and lowering blood pressure

    • Improve the body’s ability to use insulin, reducing the incidence or severity of diabetes

    • Flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances

    • Relieve stress. Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain magnesium, a natural stress reliever, from the body. Magnesium is necessary for the body to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well-being and relaxation

Your First Float

One of the best decisions you can make today!

The first time you Float is generally similar for many people. You'll likely move around a bit at first, until you find the most comfortable position for you. Once you have adjusted to the unique environment of Floating weightlessly, you'll begin to relax without distraction.

The more you Float, the easier it becomes to “let go” of the outside world. It can help you relax the body, quiet the mind, and sink into the experience.

Step 1

Create your account online. By creating an account with us, you'll be able to book appointments and make purchases on any of the services you're interested in!

Step 2

Book your Float!

Try to book at least one week in advance to allow for proper planning and preparation. We typically get booked quickly, especially during busy times of day, so you may have to plan further ahead if you want to Float at a popular time!

After you schedule your Float, you'll receive a confirmation email with our New Client Information Form and Waiver for you to complete in advance before you come. This email contains helpful pieces of advice that will better prepare you for your relaxation experience!

    Step 3

Check out the following tips in order to have the best Float possible:

    • We recommend not shaving, waxing, or tanning within 12-24 hours prior to your Float.
    • Any hair dye or treatment must be washed at least twice before Floating.
    • Don't come super-hungry or super-full, as either of these could be a distraction during your Float.
    • We provide just about everything: linens, soap, shampoo/conditioner, hairdryers, lotions, beverages, and much more! Although, you may want to bring things you use after showering, like a hairbrush, contact lenses, or makeup. No need for a bathing suit.
    • We do have a 24-hour Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy, so just give us a day's notice if you decide you can't make it.

    Step 4

Arrive at East Coast Float Spa!

There is plenty of free parking in the lot, so no hassles there. For your first Float, please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Arriving early will ensure we can give you the best experience possible, ensure you are able to Float for the full duration, and so we can be respectful of all Clients' appointments. Unfortunately, new Clients who do not arrive at least 15 minutes prior may not be able to use the service for which they are scheduled for the entire duration or may be required to reschedule.

    Step 5

    It's time to start Floating!

    • Take a quick pre-Float shower to remove any hair, face, or body products that you have on.
    • Insert your new ear plugs to keep the salt out of your ears.
    • Make sure to cover any cuts or scratches with the provided petroleum jelly after you shower.

    • Take a step into the Floatation Therapy Room directly from the shower.

    • Float!

    • After your Float, the light will come on to bring you back, before the filtration system begins a couple minutes later.

    • Take a quick post-Float shower to wash all the Epsom salt off your body.
    • Get dressed and take care of any post-shower rituals you need to, including use of our Vanity Room with complimentary hairdryers, hair detangler, and lotion.
    • After Floating, head back to our Post Float Lounge for complementary organic tea and relax for a while before you go (trust us on this one): you can keep relaxing even further in front of the calming ambiance of the rock waterfall, or try out some of our other relaxation services like our two high-end Zero-Gravity Massage Chairs, flavored Oxygen Bar, Organic Tea Blend Bar, or enjoy an item from our Revitalization Menu offering organic, natural healthy snacks and drinks.
    • Let us know about your experience in our Community Float Journal. Enjoy your post-Float afterglow!
